  Itinerary
Day 01

Cusco - Cusipata - Pallay Punchu Mountain - Cusco

The adventure to Pallay Punchu 1 Day Tour starts with the pick-up from your hotel early in the morning, from 3:30 to 4:00 am. We will drive in our private transportation for about 2 hours to reach Cusipata. This is a small town where we will stop for breakfast. After we have enjoyed our Andean breakfast, we will continue driving to reach the trailhead at the bottom of the mountains.

For the last hour of driving, we will pass through picturesque Andean communities where you will observe the locals raising their cows, horses, and alpacas. It offers a glimpse into the rural life of the Andean people.

Once at the trailhead (4,500 m or 14,763 ft), we start our hike towards Pallay Punchu. At the beginning, you can see how the colors show up while you are ascending. Usually the hike is relatively easy and takes around 40 minutes to reach the first viewpoint. From here you will observe the best colors that this mountain offers.

The striking reds, pinks, and greens of the mountains provide an unforgettable backdrop as hikers make their way closer. Unlike the crowded Vinicunca, Pallay Punchu offers a more peaceful hike.

Pallay Punchu mountain’s features are undoubtedly dramatic, with colorful hills that dominate the landscape; the vibrant hues are best appreciated when viewed at a distance. The colors appeared from the presence of various mineral deposits.

After you have explored the breathtaking panoramic views, you will make your way back to the bus. On the way down, you can appreciate the stunning Langui Lake, which is one of the biggest in the area. Board the bus for a drive to Cusipata to enjoy the delicious lunch; finally, you can drive back to Cusco.

Yes, our car will stop in some places where you can use the restroom (toilets). Also, in the restaurants you will find these; if you will need it as an emergency, just let your tour guide know to stop in the nearest bathroom.

How Challenging is the Hike to Pallay Punchu Mountain?

The Pallay Punchu Rainbow Mountain tour is not demanding, and it can be done just with a few days of acclimatization in Cusco, but keep in mind that this tourist destination is at 4,700 meters. However, we recommend training with some exercises a few times per week to not have problems. Also, it is recommended to stay rehydrated a few days before going on the tour.

What happens if I get altitude sickness on the tour?

No worry, our guides and team are professional, and they know how to assist if someone gets affected by the altitude. Your guide will have a first aid kit all the time with some medications for these and an oxygen balloon in case you need it.

How long is the drive from Cusco?

The drive from Cusco to the trailhead (usually near the community of Layo) takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours one way.

How long is the hike??

The duration of the hike can vary, but the most common round-trip hike from the nearest parking area is about 1.5 to 2 hours of total walking time, with a steady and steep ascent. The distance is roughly 2.5 km (1.5 miles) round trip from the short trailhead.

When is the best time to visit Pallay Punchu?

The best time to visit Pallay Punchu Mountain is during the dry season (from May to September). During these months the views are better, the sky is clear with a bit of clouds, and the colors are more vibrant. During the wet season (from October to April), the weather is more unpredictable, there are rainy days, the views are not clear enough, and it is a bit slippery.

What is the altitude of Pallay Punchu Mountain?

Pallay Punchu Mountain sits at 4,700 meters (15,718 feet) above sea level. However, you’ll find a chance to hike higher if you prefer.

How long is the Pallay Punchu tour?

Do I Need Hiking Boots for the Pallay Punchu Hike?

Definitely, it is always recommended to wear light hiking boots if possible. However, for our traditional day tours where you do not need to hike for hours, you can go with sneakers. For the Pallay Punchu mountain tour, you need ones with ankle support; they are extra helpful, especially for the inexperienced hiker. Because you will be climbing and going down on slippery stairs, and some of them could be muddy, uneven, and at varying heights, the extra support helps prevent twisting your ankles.

Should I Use Trekking Poles?

Yes. Walking sticks are always helpful to trekkers, especially if it is raining along the trek. Using walking sticks can help take the pressure off your knees while doing some portion of the trek. Plus they will help you get up the mountain as well.

Where Do I Store My Luggage During the Pallay Punchu 1 Day?

In case you have extra luggage that you do not need to bring to the trail, all the hotels in Cusco have storage where you can leave your luggage completely free. If you will change your hotel after the trek, we have available our storage in the Machu Picchu by Locals office; get more info from our office team.

What should I expect as far as weather?

The weather in the Cusco region and parts of the Andes is unpredictable; even if the weather forecast says it’s sunny, we can’t trust in it. It is an impossible question for us to answer. Historically, April through September is the dry season, November through February is the rainy season, and March and October are bridge months—a mixture of both.

But the clouds have not followed these rules in the last few years. Prepare for sun and rain no matter when you come. As far as temperatures go, that is consistent throughout the year. Mornings and evenings are always cold. Make sure to bring a fleece jacket for the mornings and a down jacket for the evenings. Once the sun is up, you should be comfortable hiking in short sleeves. Long pants (yoga or hiking) are encouraged to help with the mosquitos, which can be a nuisance in some parts of the trail.
