Restrictions for Visiting Machu Picchu

Everything you need to know about Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of those places that’s on a lot of people’s bucket lists, and honestly, it’s not hard to see why. But before you head out on your journey to the ancient Incan citadel, it’s important to be aware of some restrictions for visiting Machu Picchu. These rules are mostly to protect the site and ensure that it remains well-preserved for future generations, but they can affect how you plan your trip.

Machu Picchu the Seven Wonders

Ticket for Machu Picchu

First off, there’s a limit to how many people can visit Machu Picchu each day. The Peruvian government controls access pretty tightly, with only about 2,500 tickets available per day. It might sound like a lot, but during the high season (from May to September), those tickets can sell out fast. So, it’s a good idea to book your tickets well in advance to avoid any last-minute disappointments. Keep in mind, there are no sales at the entrance, so you’ll want to secure your spot online or through a travel agency.

Re-enter to Machu Picchu

Another thing that catches many people off guard is the no re-entry policy. Once you’re inside Machu Picchu, you can’t leave and come back in the same day. So, make sure you’ve got everything with you before you enter—whether that’s water, snacks, or your camera. Speaking of which, tripods are actually prohibited. If you’re a photographer who loves setting up the perfect shot, you might want to rethink that. Drones are also a no-go, which makes sense, given how much they could disrupt the experience for other visitors.

Circuit in Machu Picchu

And when it comes to exploring the ruins, don’t expect to just wander wherever you like. There are designated paths you’ll need to stick to, and in some areas, you may even have to follow a specific route. This might feel a bit restrictive, especially if you’re someone who likes to explore on your own terms, but it’s all in the name of preservation. Guides are also required for some circuits, so be prepared to have a bit of structure during your visit.

Machu Picchu Elevation

Also, remember that Machu Picchu is at a pretty high altitude, so it’s a good idea to pace yourself and take it easy while walking around. Comfortable shoes and lightweight clothing are must-haves, but don’t get too comfy—walking sticks are only allowed if you have a medical need, and even then, they must have a rubber tip. And if you’re planning to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, be aware that those require separate tickets with their own limits and regulations.

Machu Picchu Peru

Propagants are not allowed in Machu Picchu.

Lastly, a fun little tidbit: you’re not allowed to wear costumes or carry banners inside the site. I know it sounds a little random, but hey, some people like to bring a bit of flair to their travels. So if you were thinking of dressing up or making a big scene for the ‘Gram, you might want to save that for after your tour.

Visiting Machu Picchu is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it’s a good idea to keep these restrictions in mind when planning your adventure. A little preparation goes a long way to ensure your trip is smooth and enjoyable, and that you’re doing your part to protect this amazing piece of history.
